How Many Balloons Do You Need to Float a House?

In Up, crotchety old Carl decides he's had enough and floats his house off to South America.  In the film, the animators reportedly used 20,622 balloons for the liftoff scene, but how many balloons would he really need?

A few of the science types among us have taken up the challenge of figuring up how many balloons you would need to float your house up into the air.  They came up with widely varying conclusions.

Wired says you would need 105, 854 of them, each three feet in diameter.  Slate says that it would take 9.4 million typical party balloons, each 11 inches in diameter.  Pete Doctor, the co-director of Up says his technicians at Pixar estimated it would take 23.5 million balloons to lift the house, though he didn't say how big the balloons would need to be.

I'm going with the 23.5 million just to be on the safe side.  I'll see you in South America.
